How to avoid scams
Do's and Don'ts
Do's...
- Always meet with the seller in person and inspect the items before buying.
- Take a famiy member or friend along with you. Two pairs of eyes are better than one and safety comes in numbers.
- Ignore ads that appear too good to be true … they most likely are.
- Always call a business to verify that an item is legitimate or tickets/vouchers are valid.
- Use Google to your advantage. Research the item and the seller - scams are often well documented.
Dont's...
- Never send money through services like Western Union, Money Gram, PayPal, or BidPay.
- Never accept any cheques or other uncleared funds for items sold.
- Never deal with sellers who are outside of the UK, or who are shipping goods from outside the UK.
- Never provide sellers your personal information, such as banking details, your mother's maiden name, etc.
- Never pay a large depost to secure an item unless you have already carried out extensive due diligence.
- Never let your emotions get the best of you. Scammers may fabricate stories in order to gain your trust, sympathy or make quick decisions.
Due to the nature of classifieds websites in general you should always be vigilent when trading with unknown individuals. While Flogr.com makes every effort to ensure that our listings are genuine and responds as quickly as possible to scam reports sent to our [email protected] address, not every scam is obvious. The guide above should be used in addition to your own common sense and Flogr.com cannot be held responsible for any losses incurred. REMEMBER: If a deal seems to good to be true, then it probably is!
